Why Is Chocolate Dangerous for Dogs?

Chocolate contains two methylxanthine compounds: theobromine and, to a lesser extent, caffeine. In humans, these are metabolized quickly and harmlessly. Dogs, however, process theobromine far more slowly — it accumulates in their system and disrupts normal heart, kidney, and nervous system function.

The darker and purer the chocolate, the higher its theobromine content and the greater the risk. Baking chocolate and dark chocolate are the most dangerous; white chocolate contains negligible amounts and poses minimal risk.
