⚕️ Veterinary Note: The Body Condition Score is the gold-standard method used by veterinarians worldwide. This tool uses the standard 9-point BCS scale. Always consult your vet before making significant changes to your pet's diet or exercise routine.

How the BCS Calculator works

📏
What is BCS? Body Condition Score (BCS) is a 9-point scale used by vets to assess fat coverage. It's more reliable than weight alone because it accounts for breed and frame size.
👐
How to check. Run your fingers along your pet's ribcage. Ribs should be easily felt but not visibly protruding. From above, you should see a visible waist. From the side, there should be an abdominal tuck.
🎯
Ideal is BCS 4–5. A score of 4 or 5 out of 9 means your pet is at a healthy weight. Ribs easily palpated, waist visible from above, moderate abdominal tuck.
📊
Target weight formula. If your pet is overweight, their ideal weight ≈ current weight ÷ (1 + (BCS − 5) × 0.1). For underweight: ideal weight ≈ current weight ÷ (1 − (5 − BCS) × 0.1).
